One of the best months of the year is finally here, bringing tons of new titles to our shelves. From fantasy to romance, fiction to non-fiction, you’ll definitely need to go book shopping at least once (or twice!) over the next few weeks.
1. Romance
This isn’t the first time we’ve screamed incoherently about Katherine Center’s books on this blog, and it certainly won’t be the last. If you’re a fan of romance, you’ll be a fan of her writing. We don’t make the rules.
2. General & Literary Fiction
Okay, we’ll be honest… we didn’t get farther than the tagline before adding this one to our TBR. Once we heard Before We Hit The Ground described as a “moving exploration of family, migration, class, queerness and belonging”, we were sold.
3. Horror, Mystery & Thrillers
Author Julie Soto has been killing it lately. Literally, in this case. The Thrashers is one of our most anticipated releases of the year and we sure hope it delivers. If her other books are anything to go by, this one is going to be an instant bestseller.
4. Science-Fiction & Fantasy
Have you ever been down on your luck? Of course you have - we’ve all been there - but at least we weren't thrown into a deadly tournament to fight for a throne we didn't want.
The Raven Scholar promises to be one of the best fantasy books of the year, and we’ve been counting down the days until it hits our shelves.
5. Young Adult
Even though we’ve been told not to judge a book by its cover a hundred times, we still keep doing it. We don’t know much about This Dream Will Devour Us other than the fact that it looks gorgeous and is about to become a very pretty trophy on our shelf. Don't you want it for yours?
6. Historical Fiction
What’s better than reading a book by a great writer…? Reading a book by a great writer ABOUT a great writer. My Name is Emilia Del Valle has all you’ve ever wanted, and more.
7. Romantasy
A Fate Inked in Blood by Danielle L. Jensen was one of The Book Cow’s favourite releases of last year. Seriously. It was incredible - an instant five-star read. As such, we’re eagerly anticipating the release of the sequel.
8. Children’s Fiction
The next bestselling Jessica Townsend book is here! Nevermoor has become a beloved series all over the world, and the wait for number four is finally over.
Silverborn has hit our shelves already and is racking up the sales. Don't miss out!
9. Non-Fiction
Do you find it easy to forgive and forget? If not,
The Art of Forgiveness is calling your name. Holding onto resentment, while valid in some cases, can weigh you down. It’s time to reset and move on.
10. Graphic Novels & Manga
Have you been craving a light-hearted read? This middle-grade, coming-of-age manga tackles some of life's big questions. Perfect for anyone fearing an upcoming move, Bounce Back will have you gushing and giggling.
11. Dystopian
Remember when The Hunger Games was taking the world by storm and it led the way for Divergent, Shatter Me, and a bunch of other popular dystopian books? Well, the 2010s are back. Mark our words, Silver Elite will soon be trending.

From the get-go, Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil promised to tick all of my boxes. Not only is it by an author I’ve adored since 2015, but it drew me in with the promise of toxic, lesbian vampires.
I was not disappointed.

How to Plan a Successful Book Launch at The Book Cow Whether you’ve scored a contract with the “ Big 5 ”, found a home with an indie publisher, or are doing it all yourself… you deserve to celebrate in style. This is everything you need to know to execute a successful book launch. Step 1. Set Realistic Goals What is the purpose behind your book launch? Do you want to… Increase your visibility as an author? Share this moment with your loved ones? Sell a certain number of books? Tell your story to a wider audience? Setting some goals for your launch will give you a target to aim toward, allowing you to make a cohesive plan. Step 2. Allocate a Budget Did you know that The Book Cow doesn’t charge an event fee? We know that getting a book ready for publishing can be an expensive venture, so we offer our venue and equipment for free. However, if you’d like to, you can start putting some money aside to fund something a little more extravagant. Some optional costs may include…: Food & Drink Decorations Giveaways (i.e. bookmarks) Online Adverts Marketing Step 3. Choose Your Ideal Release Date We find it easier to coordinate with authors who already have a rough date in mind for their book launch. Otherwise, there’s a lot of back and forth! Before you email us, try to choose a 2-week timeframe that works for you. We’ll then reply with any available slots, or, if we're all booked up, offer other options. Step 4. Choose Your Venue Depending on the target audience for your book, it may be more suitable to host your book launch in the park opposite our shop (Green Square). Young children like a little bit of space to run around, while adults tend to be much happier inside! Step 5. Provide Your Book Information Once the date, time, and venue of your book launch have been decided upon, we’ll be keen to upload the details to our website . To do so, we’ll need… Your book’s ISBN, blurb, and cover image. Your author photo and biography. We’ll then create the event through Humanitix , enabling pre-bookings. Once approved, it will show up on our events page. Step 6. Plan Your Event It’s time! The real work is about to begin. When you put a lot of thought into planning your book launch , the return will be tenfold. If you’d like to encourage attendees outside of your immediate circle to come along, start thinking out of the box. You could prepare… A game or activity based on your book. A Q&A. Book samples. Relevant entertainment (such as a musician or face painter). A special guest to feature. An evocative speech. Promotional handouts. A hashtag for social media. Props. Food and drinks. The list is endless! Although these extras aren’t necessary for planning a successful launch - all you really need is yourself and your book - they can help everyone have a good time! Plus, who doesn’t love cupcakes? Step 7. Market Your Event Once all the plans are in place, it’s time to start promoting your book launch. Even if it feels a little awkward to put yourself out there, it’s so important. Be sure to invite your friends and family as it’ll be extra special to have everyone you love celebrating with you. You could also try… Sharing your event on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. Connecting with relevant groups to promote the launch. Preparing a poster and leaving it on community notice boards. The Book Cow will also share your book launch through our channels, so don’t worry if you don’t know anyone in Canberra. Your audience is out there! Step 8. Follow Up A week or two before your event, we encourage you to reach out to our events team. We’ll be able to estimate attendance numbers and answer any questions you may have. It’s always good to reassure yourself that everything is in order and we’re happy to offer that comfort. Step 9. Enjoy! A book launch is a momentous occasion. Congratulations! You deserve to have an incredible time. We’ll help you to set up on the day, making sure everything is ready to go. Step 10. Thank Your Attendees As the hours fly by and your book launch comes to a close, make sure to thank your attendees for coming - especially if you don’t know them! The last moments of a book launch are crucial for converting interest into sales and recognising their participation in your big day will make everyone feel happy. Step 11. Encourage Ongoing Support “Please may you leave a review?” This one question can transform the trajectory of your future as an author. A book launch is only the start of your journey, and encouraging your readers to follow you online, talk about your book, and write a review will boost your visibility and allow you to reach new audiences. You’ve got this. Planning a Successful Book Launch at The Book Cow - FAQs How do I plan a successful book launch? The secret to planning a successful book launch is starting early. The moment you know you have a book coming out, start promoting it online. Why should I have a formal book launch? “Hype” is a key ingredient to early sales. Today is International Day of People with Disabilities. The Book Cow was proud to be part of the Libraries ACT event last night about disability representation and what makes 'good' representation in books.
We heard from three great local authors Yenn Purkis, Craig Cormick OAM and Liam Adams about their thoughts on the importance and challenges of writing stories that represent people with disability in complex, real-world ways. Informed by their own personal experiences and perspectives it was a thoughtful and provoking discussion.

During the week we had a visit from Air Commodore Kirrily Dearing AM to chat about her recent publication, Changing Altitudes: Stories of Australian Air Force Women.
Kirrily has contributed along with four others, in capturing the experiences of women who have proudly served their nation in different elements of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) since the 1940s.

Did you know that there is an election going on at the moment? No, not the ACT or Queensland one. Much more important. Its the BCT Election.
Kids never get to vote and we don't think that is fair. Voting is so much fun. Why should the adults only have the fun!!??
So to change it a bit we are holding our very own elections - for the BCT (the Book Cow Territory).
Only kids can vote at this election. And just like a real election we have preferential voting (alas no Robson Rotation this time...) and two ballot papers.
The blue ballot paper is to elect the favourite Canberra kids book written or illustrated by a Canberran. This list has been informed by nomination from ABC Radio Canberra and some local politicians.
The red ballot paper is to elect the favourite book character who will also be named the Chief Minister of the BCT.
Voting is open from Saturday 12 October until 3pm Saturday 19 October. There is only one place to vote - the Book Cow in Kingston. And we have a real ballot box!!
When we stop voting local election aficionado and author Krys Saclier will come and show us how to count the vote so we can work out who will be elected. Our very own tally room in the Book Cow and we will need counters and scrutineers!!

Had a great time yesterday with Sharon Baldwin @shazofalltrades making smooth green smoothies in Green Square. We used the recipe from her kids counting book One Green Smoothie and it worked a treat!

The theme of Love Your Bookshop Day (LYBD) 2024 is Giving the Gift of Imagination, celebrating the crucial role bookshops play in inspiring our imagination and this book is a wonderful example of how reading inspires the imagination of our young ones.
What do we dream of when we sleep, what journeys do we take? Do we dream of faraway lands, beautiful creatures? Go on an adventure around Australia and discover the beautiful colourful birds of a variety of regions.
Rachel's exquisitely illustrated book is designed to grow with your child, offering not only an imaginative story but also educational information about the fascinating birds featured within its pages. As your little one develops, you can explore the factual tidbits together, nurturing their curiosity and love for the natural world.
Rachel graduated from the Canberra School of Art in the 90s and has exhibited extensively. She has a bachelor’s in arts and diplomas in Painting & Printing and Education. After winning a major scholarship from the Hewia Nakajima Foundation, Rachel travelled to Japan and studied in the printmaking department at Kyoto Seika University. Rachel has exhibited in Canberra and Sydney, has collections of works in Tokyo, National Gallery of Australia, and in the chief ministry office Australia. Recent art exhibitions have been dedicated to donating. The themes have involved preservation and conservation of environment and animals.

Milk is a powerful, entertaining and, at times, eviscerating commentary on the most controversial of original superfoods.
It's in our coffee, on our cereal. We see it in processed form – yoghurt, butter, cheese, skimmed and lactose free. It's there in almond form, or made from oats or soy, and is as lauded as the 'perfect' food or lambasted as not fit for human consumption and a toxic planet killer, depending on who you trust. Which type you drink, whether you were raised on breastmilk, what you think of it, is affected by culture, biology and fashion. How you view it is driven by your gender and your politics, as well as your geography.
The miracle liquid has suffered an image problem. It has been used to keep people poor, to keep women subjugated, and to build corporate and medical careers. It's been blamed for climate change, the breakdown of human health, and an enabler of the industrial revolution. From perfect food to pariah, milk's role in life has often been debased.
Milk celebrates the majesty of this noble liquid, and delves into the pretenders to its throne, from formula to Mylk. It looks at the transformation of what a milk-producer eats into one of the most nutrient dense foods available, and how that can be transformed again into the butter, cheese and clotted cream that we know and love today. First up - come along on Tuesday 8 October at 11:30am and learn some juicy counting with Sharon Baldwin and her latest book One Green Smoothie!! Illustrated by Inga Hope, One Green Smoothie is a counting book AND a recipe book. Ideal for preschoolers from ages two to six it is the perfect way to introduce kids to more fresh fruit and veg. And we may even be able to make a real smoothie - what do you think will be in it!??! It will be Green Smoothies in Green Square!!
Next up on Wednesday 9 October at 11am we have a very special guest - Gabrielle Tozer coming to celebrate her new kid's picture book Before We Met. This is an amazing picture book (created with Sophie Beer) that is a heartfelt and moving tribute to the anticipation and excitement that a child can bring, and the ways in which a family can be created, including IVF and adoption. There will be cookies. There will be a reading, There will be book signings (of this and Gabe's other books as well). Oh!! And did we mention that there will be Jack Heath as well??!!
Gabrielle Tozer is an award-winning author, freelance writer and editor based in Wagga Wagga in regional New South Wales. She is the author of eight books, including some Young Adult / Teen favs at the Book Cow - The Unexpected Mess of it All, Before We Met, Can’t Say It Went to Plan, Remind Me How This Ends and The Intern, which won the 2015 State Library of Victoria’s Gold Inky Award. * Thrives in a fast-paced environment and handles competing demands efficiently.
* Possesses a solid knowledge of books and authors across various genres and is eager to expand this knowledge.
* Demonstrates a genuine interest in the operations of a small, family-owned business and is prepared for a hands-on role, which includes everything from stock management to customer service.

Thelma is a new action-comedy film with a whole lot of heart, starring Oscar-nominee June Squibb in her first leading role at 93. The film also features trailblazing actor Richard Rountree (Shaft) in his final screen role, as well as Parker Posey and White Lotus’ Fred Hechinger.
When 93-year-old Thelma Post gets duped by a phone scammer pretending to be her grandson, she sets out on a treacherous quest across the city to reclaim what was taken from her.
The film is Josh Margolin’s feature directorial debut and is inspired by his own grandmother’s real-life experience with phone scammers. Thelma puts a clever spin on movies like Mission: Impossible, shining the spotlight on an elderly grandmother as an unlikely action hero. In the first leading film role of her 70-year career, Squibb portrays the strong-willed Thelma with grit and determination, demonstrating that she is more than capable of taking care of business – despite what her daughter Gail (Posey), son-in-law Alan (Gregg), or grandson Danny might believe.

Congratulations to all the winning and honour books in the CBCA Book of the Year announcements yesterday.
The announcements reflect the creativity and talent of so many authors, illustrators, publishers and creatives involved in making stories for kids that are engaging, original and fun to read.
The Book Cow watched the announcement from the National Library. It was great to see so many local Canberra schools (primary and high school ) in attendance to watch the announcement but also share their creative responses as part of the CBCA's shadow judging project. The responses were all amazing, diverse and very very creative.
The announcements kick start what will be a busy week for many schools and school libraries - with Book Week 2024 bigger than ever before. We have lots of kids wandering the shelves of the shop looking for book week character costume inspiration. And we have been busy setting up book fairs for a record number of local schools across Canberra (and the region!!). It was a slightly dark and scary night as we joined JJ Carpenter to help launch book two in the much anticipated sequel in the Corner of her Eye series - The Road. Local Canberra author Kaaron Warren sat in the other chair and led us in an engaging and fun discussion about writing horror stories.
Charlie White thought this was the end. She thought once she accepted her fate as a Keeper of Purgatory, her story would conclude. But she's just scratched the surface; this is only the beginning.
As she grapples with an ever-expanding new world beyond the grave, she begins to draw imbalanced, disturbed and helpless spirits to herself in greater and greater numbers. How deep must she venture through the layers of purgatory? And who else - or rather what else - lurks in the shadows of limbo?
It's not just Charlie whose sanity, life and reality are under threat any more. But just how much rests on her shoulders? And will she figure out how to fulfil her duty before she runs out of time?
