Happy Love Your Bookshop Day 2024!!

Love Your Bookshop Day (LYBD) is on Saturday 12 October 2024. At the Book Cow will be celebrating on the day and the following day with a range of great events, competitions, giveaways and, of course, our Spring Book Sale.

The theme for LYBD 2024 is Giving the Gift of Imagination, celebrating the crucial role bookshops play in inspiring our imagination.

Bookshops don’t just sell books; they are gateways to endless worlds. Stepping into a bookshop can transport you to a universe where you can explore the depths of Greek mythology, attend schools of magic, or journey through space with a little prince. Your local bookshop is your passport to anywhere your imagination takes you. Your local bookseller adopts the role of travel guide, navigating you through these unique worlds and providing you with your next potential obsession.

Special LYBD Events

MEET THE AUTHOR - Emma Lord - Sat 10:30am

Emma Lord is a debut YA author. She will be popping in to the shop at 10:30am Saturday to chat about her debut YA novel Anomaly. Piper Manning survived the apocalypse. Barely. She recovered from the virus that killed millions, but it left behind a new, uncontrollable power that's forced her to isolate herself from others — for their sake. Then an injured boy shows up at her mountain hideaway. And what hurt Seth is out to get her, too. Now she's on the run, risking everything for a shot at an actual future. But to get there, she'll have to trust a stranger, control her abilities … and face her ghosts. Because the end of the world was just the beginning.

Emma writing career began when her mum discovered only a notepad and pen could keep her from escaping her pram and running off (it was the ’80s…they make better prams now). Thankfully, she found a better means of escape: reading and writing stories. A copywriter by trade, she’s written everything from TV commercials to articles for The Sydney Morning Herald, HuffPost, and The Chaser. She has also tutored courses in creative writing.

BOOK LAUNCH - When I Sleep I Dream of Australian Birds by Rachel Head - Sat 11am

What do we dream of when we sleep, what journeys do we take? Do we dream of faraway lands, beautiful creatures?  Go on an adventure around Australia and discover the beautiful colourful birds of a variety of regions.

This exquisitely illustrated book is designed to grow with your child, offering not only an imaginative story but also educational information about the fascinating birds featured within its pages. As your little one develops, you can explore the factual tidbits together, nurturing their curiosity and love for the natural world.

BOOK CHAT - Matthew Evans in conversation with Karen Hardy about Milk- SUN 2pm at Winnings.

You're invited to a special book chat event as part of our Spring Into Kingston weekend hosted by The Book Cow, Cook & Co and Winnings to chat about Milk by Matthew Evans, a powerful, entertaining and, at times, eviscerating commentary on the most controversial of original superfoods.

Milk. It's in our coffee, on our cereal. We see it in processed form – yoghurt, butter, cheese, skimmed and lactose free. It's there in almond form, or made from oats or soy, and is as lauded as the 'perfect' food or lambasted as not fit for human consumption and a toxic planet killer, depending on who you trust.

All bookworms love dragons. It’s a fact. Even if you never read fantasy books, you have to admit… they’re one of the coolest mythological creatures out there. Sure, unicorns are pretty and mermaids can breathe underwater, but dragons are powerful, intelligent, and bloodthirsty. I’ll admit, I picked up A Language of Dragons because I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to re-read Fourth Wing for the third time. “This’ll scratch the itch,” I thought to myself as I browsed the ARCs sent to The Book Cow. Boy, was I right. A Language of Dragons is everything the cover promises. There’s action, adventure, and fun galore. I loved seeing dragons depicted in our world and, for once, they weren’t written as some superior, untouchable species. In fact, the whole plot revolves around them fighting humans for more rights. Consider me intrigued. The main character, much like Violet, is a bit of a geek - but not in an insufferable way. Although I would have preferred for her to find her voice a little sooner, she does eventually recognise that she’s on the wrong path. We love a self-aware queen! If you’re a fan of academia, great world-building, and a fantastic cast of characters, A Language of Dragons might just be the book for you. It’s fast-paced, addictive, and a refreshing take on the fantasy genre. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Are the early 2010s back in fashion?! I must admit… I’m here for it. Silver Elite presented a not-so-refreshing take on the dystopian genre but, despite its reliance on popular tropes, I am officially OBSESSED. It reads like a romantasy book wrapped in a destroy-the-government package - bringing me very happy memories of enjoying Divergent in my early teenhood. If you’re a fan of cheesy (admittedly captivating) writing and like books that are a lot of fun, I highly recommend Silver Elite… that’s not to say it doesn’t get serious. This book is not for the light-hearted. The author, Dani Francis, is not afraid to play with your emotions. Even the main character isn't safe from the ever-haunting threat of death, forcing you to remain on the edge of your seat. I’d love to see a movie adaptation in the near future! ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Are you constantly trying to encourage your children to read? We've got you covered. Instead of relying on us adults to point you toward books that your kids will love, we asked for help from local students.

As Canberra’s specialist children’s bookshop, we’ve become the go-to for recommendations. Now, we’re passing over the baton… to the students themselves. Over the past few weeks, The Book Cow has been working with local schools to gain insight into their favourite titles. These reviews are by kids, for kids.

One of the best months of the year is finally here, bringing tons of new titles to our shelves. From fantasy to romance, fiction to non-fiction, you’ll definitely need to go book shopping at least once (or twice!) over the next few weeks.

Has the synopsis of a book ever made you fall hopelessly and irrevocably in love? From the get-go, Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil promised to tick all of my boxes. Not only is it by an author I’ve adored since 2015, but it drew me in with the promise of toxic, lesbian vampires. I was not disappointed.
