Is it just me, or are romantasy books getting a little predictable?

I get it.

There's a recipe for best-selling books, with certain tropes that readers like me gobble up every time. Still, when you know what the 'plot twist' is going to be for 60% of the book, there's no room for any suspense.

That being said, other than the eye-rolling 'was that meant to be a dramatic reveal?", Shield of Sparrows was thoroughly enjoyable.

It was fast-paced, well-rounded, and admittedly addictive. It sets the scene for an incredible series, with a fascinating magic system that felt pretty refreshing compared to everything else I've read recently, and a world map that's well worth exploring.

The writing was descriptive, the plot was a page-turner, and (some) of the characters were quite loveable. Four-stars!

A Language of Dragons - An Honest ARC Review

All bookworms love dragons. It’s a fact.

Even if you never read fantasy books, you have to admit… they’re one of the coolest mythological creatures out there. Sure, unicorns are pretty and mermaids can breathe underwater, but dragons are powerful, intelligent, and bloodthirsty.

I’ll admit, I picked up A Language of Dragons because I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to re-read Fourth Wing for the third time. “This’ll scratch the itch,” I thought to myself as I browsed the ARCs sent to The Book Cow.

Boy, was I right.

A Language of Dragons is everything the cover promises. There’s action, adventure, and fun galore. I loved seeing dragons depicted in our world and, for once, they weren’t written as some superior, untouchable species. In fact, the whole plot revolves around them fighting humans for more rights.

Consider me intrigued.

The main character, much like Violet, is a bit of a geek - but not in an insufferable way. Although I would have preferred for her to find her voice a little sooner, she does eventually recognise that she’s on the wrong path. We love a self-aware queen!

If you’re a fan of academia, great world-building, and a fantastic cast of characters, A Language of Dragons might just be the book for you. It’s fast-paced, addictive, and a refreshing take on the fantasy genre.

Silver Elite - An Honest ARC Review

Are the early 2010s back in fashion?! I must admit… I’m here for it.

Silver Elite presented a not-so-refreshing take on the dystopian genre but, despite its reliance on popular tropes, I am officially OBSESSED.

It reads like a romantasy book wrapped in a destroy-the-government package - bringing me very happy memories of enjoying Divergent in my early teenhood. If you’re a fan of cheesy (admittedly captivating) writing and like books that are a lot of fun, I highly recommend Silver Elite… that’s not to say it doesn’t get serious.

This book is not for the light-hearted. The author, Dani Francis, is not afraid to play with your emotions. Even the main character isn't safe from the ever-haunting threat of death, forcing you to remain on the edge of your seat.

I’d love to see a movie adaptation in the near future!

How often do you read outside of your preferred genre?

My answer to this question is never .

I've been an avid reader since early childhood, always pestering my parents for new books. After almost 20 years, I know exactly what I like. I can practically read a blurb and know instantly whether it's going to be worth my time.

So, imagine my surprise when ' Death and Other Occupational Hazards ' by Veronika Dapunt spoke to me almost instantly. While slightly fantastical (in the sense that it brings the Grim Reaper to life), it certainly isn't fantasy. Cozy murder mysteries are so far outside of my comfort zone that I tend to avoid them at all costs... until now.

Last month, I headed into The Book Cow as usual - keen to find something new to read. I browsed through the Advanced Reader Copies (ARCs) that publishers had sent us that week, seeing if anything jumped out at me.

' Death and Other Occupational Hazards ' practically hit me in the face. It sounded fun, light-hearted, and, for want of a better word: goofy. Instead of rejecting it because of its genre, I decided to give it a go.

Now look at me.

This book absolutely blew me away. I couldn't put it down. In fact, I was so keen to keep reading that I had to get the audiobook - allowing me to listen in the car, as I did chores, and on my daily walk. It's seriously addictive. Thank you, Penguin!

About the Book

It is a great fiction novel that brings a lot of magic, friendship, and a touch of adventure into an AMAZING story. It follows the lives of two sisters Flick and Birdie who have the ability to make wishes come true, thanks to the Imp in the bottle - however, these wishes are often not as simple as they might seem.

8. Wolfred by Nick Bland

We liked this story because it used rhyming words and it was funny! It involves a tiny dog, a mean pig and a kind, clever wolf. And funny golden pants! Wolfred is kind and caring and it made us feel good.

I really enjoyed Keeper of the Lost Cities because it was immersive from the start ot the finish. The world-building was rich with unique magical elements that kept me hooked. The characters were relatable and complex, and I loved seeing Sophie navigate the challenges of a hidden world. The suspense, mysteries and plot twists made it a page-turner and I couldn’t wait to see what would happen next in Sophie’s journey.

One of the best months of the year is finally here, bringing tons of new titles to our shelves. From fantasy to romance, fiction to non-fiction, you’ll definitely need to go book shopping at least once (or twice!) over the next few weeks.

1. Romance

This isn’t the first time we’ve screamed incoherently about Katherine Center’s books on this blog, and it certainly won’t be the last. If you’re a fan of romance, you’ll be a fan of her writing. We don’t make the rules.

2. General & Literary Fiction

Okay, we’ll be honest… we didn’t get farther than the tagline before adding this one to our TBR. Once we heard Before We Hit The Ground described as a “moving exploration of family, migration, class, queerness and belonging”, we were sold.

3. Horror, Mystery & Thrillers

Author Julie Soto has been killing it lately. Literally, in this case. The Thrashers is one of our most anticipated releases of the year and we sure hope it delivers. If her other books are anything to go by, this one is going to be an instant bestseller.

4. Science-Fiction & Fantasy

Have you ever been down on your luck? Of course you have - we’ve all been there - but at least we weren't thrown into a deadly tournament to fight for a throne we didn't want. The Raven Scholar promises to be one of the best fantasy books of the year, and we’ve been counting down the days until it hits our shelves.

5. Young Adult

Even though we’ve been told not to judge a book by its cover a hundred times, we still keep doing it. We don’t know much about This Dream Will Devour Us other than the fact that it looks gorgeous and is about to become a very pretty trophy on our shelf. Don't you want it for yours?

6. Historical Fiction

What’s better than reading a book by a great writer…? Reading a book by a great writer ABOUT a great writer. My Name is Emilia Del Valle has all you’ve ever wanted, and more.

7. Romantasy

A Fate Inked in Blood by Danielle L. Jensen was one of The Book Cow’s favourite releases of last year. Seriously. It was incredible - an instant five-star read. As such, we’re eagerly anticipating the release of the sequel .

From the get-go, Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil promised to tick all of my boxes. Not only is it by an author I’ve adored since 2015, but it drew me in with the promise of toxic, lesbian vampires.

I was not disappointed.

When going into your most anticipated releases of the year, it’s normal to be apprehensive. I, however, trusted V. E. Schwab explicitly. She's an experienced author who writes hits like she was born to do so.

It was an instant five-star read, hooking me in from the first page to the last. It was lyrical, haunting, and addictive throughout; making it impossible to put down.

For me (Lydia), it was Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor. Since reading it in 2017, no other author has been quite so memorable.

I’ve read it over and over again, collected every edition I could possibly get my hands on, and suggested it to everyone looking for a new favourite.

Why? Well, the answer is simple. Strange the Dreamer is a lyrical, haunting YA fantasy that has it all.

The characters are to die for, the plot is overwhelmingly addictive and the writing is beyond anything I’ve ever experienced.

On a scale of 1-5, this book is a 10. No, make it a 50.

How to Plan a Successful Book Launch at The Book Cow

Whether you’ve scored a contract with the “ Big 5 ”, found a home with an indie publisher, or are doing it all yourself… you deserve to celebrate in style. This is everything you need to know to execute a successful book launch.

Step 1. Set Realistic Goals

What is the purpose behind your book launch? Do you want to…

Increase your visibility as an author?
Share this moment with your loved ones?
Sell a certain number of books?
Tell your story to a wider audience?

Setting some goals for your launch will give you a target to aim toward, allowing you to make a cohesive plan.

Step 2. Allocate a Budget

Did you know that The Book Cow doesn’t charge an event fee? We know that getting a book ready for publishing can be an expensive venture, so we offer our venue and equipment for free. However, if you’d like to, you can start putting some money aside to fund something a little more extravagant. Some optional costs may include…:

Food & Drink
Decorations
Giveaways (i.e. bookmarks)
Online Adverts
Marketing

Step 3. Choose Your Ideal Release Date

We find it easier to coordinate with authors who already have a rough date in mind for their book launch. Otherwise, there’s a lot of back and forth! Before you email us, try to choose a 2-week timeframe that works for you. We’ll then reply with any available slots, or, if we're all booked up, offer other options.

Step 4. Choose Your Venue

Depending on the target audience for your book, it may be more suitable to host your book launch in the park opposite our shop (Green Square). Young children like a little bit of space to run around, while adults tend to be much happier inside!

Step 5. Provide Your Book Information

Once the date, time, and venue of your book launch have been decided upon, we’ll be keen to upload the details to our website .

To do so, we’ll need…

Your book’s ISBN, blurb, and cover image.
Your author photo and biography.

We’ll then create the event through Humanitix , enabling pre-bookings. Once approved, it will show up on our events page.

Step 6. Plan Your Event

It’s time! The real work is about to begin.

When you put a lot of thought into planning your book launch , the return will be tenfold. If you’d like to encourage attendees outside of your immediate circle to come along, start thinking out of the box.

You could prepare…

A game or activity based on your book.
A Q&A.
Book samples.
Relevant entertainment (such as a musician or face painter).
A special guest to feature.
An evocative speech.
Promotional handouts.
A hashtag for social media.
Props.
Food and drinks.

The list is endless!

Although these extras aren’t necessary for planning a successful launch - all you really need is yourself and your book - they can help everyone have a good time! Plus, who doesn’t love cupcakes?

Step 7. Market Your Event

Once all the plans are in place, it’s time to start promoting your book launch. Even if it feels a little awkward to put yourself out there, it’s so important. Be sure to invite your friends and family as it’ll be extra special to have everyone you love celebrating with you.

You could also try…

Sharing your event on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.
Connecting with relevant groups to promote the launch.
Preparing a poster and leaving it on community notice boards.

The Book Cow will also share your book launch through our channels, so don’t worry if you don’t know anyone in Canberra. Your audience is out there!

Step 8. Follow Up

A week or two before your event, we encourage you to reach out to our events team. We’ll be able to estimate attendance numbers and answer any questions you may have. It’s always good to reassure yourself that everything is in order and we’re happy to offer that comfort.

Step 9. Enjoy!

A book launch is a momentous occasion. Congratulations! You deserve to have an incredible time. We’ll help you to set up on the day, making sure everything is ready to go.

Step 10. Thank Your Attendees

As the hours fly by and your book launch comes to a close, make sure to thank your attendees for coming - especially if you don’t know them! The last moments of a book launch are crucial for converting interest into sales and recognising their participation in your big day will make everyone feel happy.

Step 11. Encourage Ongoing Support

“Please may you leave a review?”

This one question can transform the trajectory of your future as an author. A book launch is only the start of your journey, and encouraging your readers to follow you online, talk about your book, and write a review will boost your visibility and allow you to reach new audiences.

April 2025 will be a month to remember. This time of year is always packed full of book releases but these next few weeks in particular will introduce some incredible titles to our shelves. Your bank account is in danger!

Love Your Bookshop Day (LYBD) is on Saturday 12 October 2024. At the Book Cow will be celebrating on the day and the following day with a range of great events, competitions, giveaways and, of course, our Spring Book Sale.

The theme for LYBD 2024 is Giving the Gift of Imagination , celebrating the crucial role bookshops play in inspiring our imagination.
